On the International Day for Monuments and Sites, Mrs. Begaj invited the fifth-grade students from the “Sylë Harri” primary school in Elbasan to visit the “Kala” neighborhood together, an important part of Albanian history.
According to the Institute of Cultural Monuments, this is the largest coastal castle in the Balkans, dating back about 2000 years.
Initially, Mrs. Begaj explained to the students that the purpose of this visit was to join the global campaign based on the 2024-2027 Scientific Plan, “Sustainable Heritage Against Conflicts – Preparation, Response, and Recovery”, by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
Given the troubled situation globally, this council is developing a guide throughout 2024 for capacity building for “disaster and conflict-resilient heritage.”
Mrs. Begaj expressed the necessity of enriching our historical memory, especially among the younger generation, so that every value of our rich heritage is highlighted, appreciated, enriched, preserved, and passed down from generation to generation.
With the assistance of the city’s tour guide, Mrs. Silva Belegu, and the hosts at the United Catholic Church of Saint Peter, the Orthodox Church of Saint Mary, and the “King” Mosque, the students, like in a history lesson, were introduced to the ancient structures of their city.
The three places of worship are located close to each other within the castle, symbolizing the religious harmony in the city of Elbasan and throughout Albania.
The students, with much affection, presented Mrs. Begaj with a view from their beautiful city, Elbasan of the poets. The First Lady, aiming to spread knowledge through books, gifted each student a book.
