President of Albania, H.E. Mr. Bajram Begaj, met today in Sofia with the President of Bulgaria, H.E. Mr. Rumen Radev, for an official visit at the latter’s invitation.
The main discussion points included deepening economic cooperation, progress in EU enlargement process in the Western Balkans, regional collaboration, and defense and security cooperation within NATO.
The continuity of policies towards respective minorities in both countries was also discussed.
During a joint press conference with President Radev, President Begaj emphasized Albania’s desire to strengthen economic cooperation with Bulgaria, including trade exchanges. He expressed gratitude for Bulgarian-supported projects in Southeastern Albania.
“Today, with favorable business climates and mutual interest, conditions are ripe to further enhance this cooperation,” said President Begaj.
“The upcoming session of the Joint Economic Commission will carefully address and mobilize all opportunities and mechanisms.”
President Begaj also highlighted the geostrategic project of Corridor 8, thanking Bulgaria for its significant lobbying for its inclusion in the Trans-European Transport Network.
He commended Bulgaria for supporting Albania’s European integration, which he called “the most significant strategic project,” and expressed confidence in Bulgaria’s continued support during EU membership negotiations.
“The current security conditions in our continent, especially after Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, are delicate.
Hence, the EU’s geopolitical focus on the Western Balkans should be one of its top priorities,” he noted.
Special attention was given to defense and security collaboration and the contribution of Bulgarian troops in Kosovo as part of KFOR.
During the press conference with President Radev, President Begaj informed his counterpart about Albania’s role in the UN Security Council.
