He was born in Tropoja on October 15th, 1944. Graduated in 1967 from the Medicine Faculty of Tirana University. After successfully completing the post graduate and advanced studies in Paris, France, he directed a research program in Hemodynamic. In 1986 we was elected a member of the Medical Sciences Research’ European Committee. During the years when he taught at Tiran University, from 1980 until 1990 Sali Berisha published in Albania and abroad studies, university texts and numerous scientific articles in the field of cardiology. Mr. Berisha has received the scientific title of Professor Doctor.
Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha’s political career started with the Student’s Movement of December 1990. Before that he became known for his public criticism directed at the old regime and demands for the country’s democratization. In 1991 Sali Berisha was elected Chairman of the Democratic Party and he was re-elected in that position in 1997 and during the following years as well. He was elected a Parliamentary Member of the Albanian Assembly in 1991, in 1992, in 1997, in 2001, in 2005 and in 2009 as well.
After the opposition coalition led by Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha won the election, he was elected in April 9th, 1992 as the President of the Republic and re-elected to the high office once again on February 3rd, 1997. After the Democratic Party lost the elections, yielding power to the left coalition, a month later he resigned from the office of the President.
