“You will not find two states like Albania and Kosovo with greater support for the European Union, where, regardless of the political beliefs of citizens and political parties, the pro-Euroatlantic orientation is unchangeable,” said President Begaj in a meeting with the European Parliament’s Rapporteur for Albania, Mr. Andreas Schieder.
The Head of State thanked the European Parliament as Albania’s greatest supporter and advocate on its path to EU integration, simultaneously guaranteeing Albania’s full commitment to timely implementing the reforms required for advancing the negotiations.
The meeting discussed the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 11th, preparations, and challenges to fully meet the European Union standards for fair, free, and honest elections.
“More than the result, the process and the standards of democratic elections matter to us.
These elections come with a novelty, such as the Diaspora vote, which should be welcomed.
I have called on the political class to end the troubling phenomena of previous elections, such as the use of public funds for electoral purposes, the lack of trust between political parties, and to end the delays in producing results, so we can have a universally accepted process and make the day of the results a beautiful day for Albania, where the winner celebrates with modesty and the loser respects the result,” emphasized the Head of State during the conversation.
President Begaj expressed confidence that monitoring by the European Parliament and other national and international observers would contribute to achieving the required standards.
