The Arbëresh community of Pallagorio opened its doors today for Albanian personalities from four Balkan states—Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, Montenegro—as well as for high-ranking Italian officials, to commemorate the centenary of the death of the Arbëresh intellectual, Anselmo Lorecchio.
The participation of the President of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Bajram Begaj, and the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, symbolized the significance of this remembrance, highlighting the cultural and historical links between Italy and Albania.
“Anselmo Lorecchio’s vision of a united Europe seems to find its place today in Pallagorio, where Italy, Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, and Montenegro are together”, stated President Begaj during the ceremony for Lorecchio, which continued with the inauguration of a square named in his honor followed by an international conference.
The President of Albania expressed his gratitude to the Arbëresh for promoting not only their traditions, culture, and language but also visionary figures who are inclusive and forward-looking.
“Anselmo Lorecchio was not just a patriot but a bridge between two worlds—the Arbëresh in Italy and the Albanians in the Balkans. Born during a time when cultural identities were being shaped and defined by wars and political changes, Lorecchio understood the importance of cultural identity, the preservation of language, and customs. He defended and developed these with unwavering dedication”, said the President.
The President of Albania appreciated the work of Anselmo Lorecchio, a figure who left indelible marks on the history of Albania through his efforts for independence and his substantial contributions to the culture and history of the Arbëresh communities in Italy.
“He was not only a patriot but a bridge between two peoples, the Arbëresh in Italy and the Albanians in the Balkans. Born at a time when cultural identities were forming and defining, his life is a testament to Arbëresh culture and heritage, becoming a powerful voice for a broader Italy. His figure reminds us of the importance of defending rights and preserving identity in a world that often pushes us towards assimilation and uniformity”, declared the Head of State.
President Begaj noted Lorecchio’s impact with his newspaper “La Nazione Albaneze”, which played a crucial role in fostering national sentiment and spreading ideas for the liberation and independence of the Albanian nation.
At this conference, the Head of State called for honoring the past and helping build a bridge between generations and cultures, enriching not only the community but also the world around us.
President Begaj also visited an exhibition dedicated to Anselmo Lorecchio in Pallagorio.
