In a message addressed to the Albanian Parliament on the occasion of the new session opening, President Bajram Begaj called on the deputies to focus on Albania’s EU membership and the fight against crime and corruption.
The President urged political parties to engage in fruitful dialogue and legislative initiatives based on the concerns of the citizens.
“We must ensure that every law passed aligns with the citizens’ interests and the highest democratic standards. This requires a joint commitment and continuous efforts to ensure the Parliament remains committed and fulfills its supervisory role, guarantees the balance of powers, and protects the interests of the people,” President Begaj stated in his message to the Parliament.
As this legislature approaches its end and the electoral year draws near, the President emphasized that deputies should responsibly exercise their mandate in this direction, as “the time is also approaching to weigh the achievements and successes, the shortcomings and failures, to self-evaluate, and to be evaluated by the public.”
“In this new September, both the image and performance of the Parliament are as desired as they are necessary for our Parliament to be an inspiring arena of civic confrontation, where diverse voices engage in productive dialogue,” said the President.
Throughout the EU membership process, the President stressed that deputies need to timely implement the legal measures included in the National Integration Plan.
Another priority issue, according to the President, is the fight against crime and corruption, for which he encouraged the Parliament to promote anti-crime and anti-corruption policies as a real confrontation with a malady that must be fought at every level and every field of this detrimental phenomenon to the economy and a threat to democracy.
In this regard, President Begaj called on deputies to support justice institutions and law enforcement agencies by strengthening their financial, human, and infrastructure capacities.
Regarding new global challenges affecting security or socio-cultural issues, President Begaj emphasized the need to update strategies and legal frameworks to adapt to geopolitical changes and rapid technological developments.
President Begaj concluded his message to the Parliament by expressing, “In these times, when the sacrifices of generations are turning into support for the new generations, transforming various global and regional challenges into opportunities for our country, it is essential for the parliament to become the main ally in our country’s progress. Let’s transform this space into the Parliament of the finest Albanian ideas and the richest democratic confrontation in the region.”
