President Begaj Participates in the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Establishment of the Central State Archive
President Bajram Begaj of the Republic of Albania took part today in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Central State Archive.
During his speech at the ceremony, the President emphasized the importance of the state archive for national consciousness and collective memory, describing archivists as guardians of history.
President Begaj also considered the founding of the State Archive as historically significant, highlighting the value of the documents and rare materials it houses as witnesses to connections with ancient history and European traditions.
According to the President, promoting and facilitating access to the treasures of the State Archive is crucial for objectively understanding our past: “The study of these by experts and historians,” President Begaj said, “helps us understand our roots, appreciate the efforts of previous generations, and build a better future on this strong foundation.”
President Begaj commended Albanian archivists who, through their commitment and dedication, have made it possible to document and preserve the archive’s holdings. He stressed that alongside this commitment, public service plays a fundamental role in guaranteeing a basic human right: the preservation of life documentation and property ownership.
“Archives must be open, public, and transparent, of course, within the limits allowed by legislation and ethics. We still vividly remember the immense damage individuals and society suffer when archives are shrouded in secrecy or privileged access,” declared the President.
“The Central State Archive should be an institution that not only collects and preserves but also inspires and promotes diversity, accessibility, and transparency to the public,” stated President Bajram Begaj.
Accompanied by the Director of the General Directorate of Archives, Ardit Bido, President Begaj visited the main archive study room. After viewing the new investments like the archival museum and digital archive dedicated to youth to acquaint them with the archives, he praised Director Bido for his will, commitment, and professionalism in transforming the institution.
