The President of the Republic of Albania, H.E. Mr. Bajram Begaj, attended today the presentation ceremony of the collection “History of the Albanians during the 20th Century.” This five-volume publication by the Institute of History, based on the project of the Ministry of Education, is a product of scientific research and contributions from researchers from Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, and the Diaspora.
During his speech, the President of the Republic appreciated the efforts to bring back the truth of Albania’s past. “Writing our history accurately and without complexities, especially for the second half of the 20th century, is crucial,” President Begaj stated.
According to the President of the Republic, “History of the Albanians during the 20th Century” provides a comprehensive historical panorama.
“Our relationship with the past has not been easy, hence the need for a truthful and unburdened historical writing in general, and specifically for the second half of the 20th century, is essential.”
Concerning attempts to distort Albania’s history, President Begaj emphasized the importance of historical writing by historians, who ensure not only the application of scientific methods but also objectivity, integrity, and the need for interaction between research institutions.
“If you allow me an analogy: ‘History’ is like a sculpture, which you need to observe from different perspectives to understand. While it can indeed be written by historians, it requires contributions from researchers in various fields. Political events are as important in understanding specific situations, but they will remain individual cases unless integrated into the development of a nation where art, culture, language, and customs play their irreplaceable roles.”
Referring to Albania’s integration process into the European Union, the Head of State noted that this journey, in the context of recognizing history, takes on a special meaning as it is, in a way, a return to origin.
“Therefore, it is crucial that the accurate narrative of our nation is viewed in the light of our historical efforts to build a fair society with a European spirit,” declared President Begaj, reiterating that despite obstacles and deviations, Albanians are resolutely headed towards a democratic Europe.
