The President of the Republic of Albania, His Excellency Bajram Begaj, has decreed mayoral elections in the municipality of Himarë. Today, the Council of Ministers officially notified the President of the Republic about the vacancy created in the Himarë municipality due to the invalidation of the mandate won by Mr. Dhionisios (Alfred) Petro Beleri and requested the scheduling of the election date within the timelines specified by the Electoral Code.
The previously elected mayor of Himarë was found by the Central Election Commission to be in a condition of invalid mandate due to a final conviction for the criminal offense of “active corruption in elections,” as stipulated by Article 328 of the Penal Code of the Republic of Albania.
President Begaj consulted with Mr. Ilirjan Celibashi, the State Election Commissioner, to ascertain the capabilities and readiness of the electoral management institution to conduct elections in this municipality within the electoral code’s calendar framework.
Following this consultation, President Begaj decreed August 4, 2024, as the date for the mayoral elections in the Himarë municipality. This date was chosen as the best alternative that reconciles the need for preparation and the conduct of a regular electoral campaign with the optimal preparation of the electoral administration, considering the conditions, circumstances, and the burden brought by the tourist season to Himarë, a coastal local governance unit.
