SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, H. E. BAJRAM BEGAJ, ON FLAG DAY AND THE 112TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE

Dear Excellencies, esteemed friends, and honored guests,

Today, we come together to pay our respects to the memory and bravery of those who, over a century ago, declared and established the independence of our nation, thereby laying the groundwork for the Albanian state.

During periods of significant geopolitical transformation, such as the early 20th century, the quest for independence among small states seemed both insignificant and unattainable.

However, some visionary leaders, led by Ismail Qemali, rose to the occasion and shaped our moment—the moment of the future independent state of the Albanians.

Guided by a profound respect for their homeland and a commitment to their European identity, they have affirmed that Albania is and will continue to uphold its freedom, independence, and the pride associated with its identity.

On November 28th, 1912, the Albanian nation achieved a significant milestone following centuries of perseverance.

As we reflect on this day and the many Novembers that represent our ongoing journey of freedom, independence, and the development of the Albanian state, we express our heartfelt gratitude to those men and women who had the courage to change the course of history.

They established a crucial cornerstone in our country’s history, positioning themselves as the architects of our independent state.

The independence declared 112 years ago represented not only the fulfillment of an early dream of a nation that has thrived for centuries but also highlighted its commitment to religious harmony and coexistence, as well as to its rich and unassimilated cultural heritage.

The independence of Albania serves as a new dawn of dreams every November, symbolizing the firm determination of the Albanian people.

Every November offers an opportunity for renewal and progress as we strive to build upon the achievements of a country that is part of Europe and was reborn in 1912 as an independent state.

It is precisely on this day and moment that we extend our gratitude to our historical and strategic friend and ally, the United States of America, for the support given to the Albanian nation from the time of our declaration of independence to the independence of Kosovo.

We sincerely appreciate the contributions of the United States, the European Union, and other partners for their steadfast support in building and consolidating democracy and the rule of law, as well as strengthening Albanian institutions, particularly within the justice system.

Esteemed friends and guests,

Albanians are the heirs of the legacy of independence and the promise of a fair, pluralistic, and democratic Albania.

Upholding our independence remains a profound responsibility.

We are steadfast in our commitment to promoting a society of equal opportunities and the rule of law.

For each and every one of us, this moment calls for irrevocable commitment to the development and prosperity of Albania.

The challenges we face today extend beyond mere border protection; they encompass security, justice, the economy, education, healthcare, environmental care, and, most importantly, the well-being of our citizens.

All these require a strong dedication and a well-defined vision for the model of social and economic development.

Our independence is defined by our citizens’ quality of life, the opportunities we foster for our youth, and our commitment to enhancing the present while creating a vision for a prosperous future for our country.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The political leadership of 1912 demonstrated courage and foresight.

They set aside divisions and narrow personal interests to pursue a greater goal: establishing an independent Albania.

Today, more than ever, it is essential for politicians to follow their example.

The political class must engage in an open dialogue with the people, considering their concerns, needs, and aspirations.

Turn your eyes to those whose voice you represent.

As we approach the upcoming elections, let this serve as an opportunity to embark on a new chapter where the interests of our citizens and public service to them are placed above everything else.

This is how we pay tribute to those who declared our independence and build an Albania that deserves its place in Europe.

Opening chapters with the European Union is more than a technical process.

It serves as a meaningful evaluation of our national maturity.

This process requires our collective effort to strengthen our institutions, support justice and SPAK (the Special Anti-Corruption Structure), improve the quality of life for our citizens, and build an Albania worthy of both the Albanians and the European family.

It is now time to come together and move towards the ever more tangible European dream.

Dear Excellencies, esteemed friends, and honoured guests,

The world is currently facing significant challenges.

These include wars and conflicts at the borders of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.

In such a complex landscape, our responsibility goes beyond that of a small country merely observing these events; instead, we see ourselves as a country that contributes and inspires.

We are loyal to our Euro-Atlantic partnership and the values it represents, and we will remain irrevocably committed to ensuring that Albania continues to play an active role in promoting peace, stability, and constructive dialogue within our region and beyond.

Embracing the clarity of the values we defend and standing united with our democratic allies, we believe that no challenge is beyond our capacity to overcome.

One hundred and twelve years ago, our ancestors overcame these challenges to give us the independence we cherish today.

While we encounter our own challenges, too, we have the strength, wisdom, and maturity to address them effectively.

Dear friends and guests,

Albania is more than its geographical boundaries.

At its core, Albania is represented by its citizens who live in every corner of the globe, transmitting and promoting our values and culture.

They play significant roles in the social, cultural, and political lives of their respective communities.

As a nation with a shared identity, it is essential for both our states, Albania and Kosovo, to recognize this power we have and use it in creating alliances that enhance our presence and influence on the international stage.

Kosovo has consistently enjoyed and will continue to receive support from Albania.

This commitment extends to encouraging new recognitions and membership in international organizations alongside the achievement of common objectives, including EU membership.

The Republic of Kosovo represents a lasting reality and a significant factor in promoting regional peace.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we reflect on our journey from independence to Europe, today is the moment to honour the past, acknowledge the present, and commit responsibly to the future.

On this blessed day, November 28th, I wish every Albanian success and further achievements on our sustainable European journey of prosperity.

Wishing everyone a joyful holiday of our nation, a nation that embodies peace, freedom, hospitality, generosity, and democratic principles.

God bless Albania, and Happy Independence Day!
