President Meta calls on the Government to urgently declare the “State of Natural Disaster” in the flooded areas in Shkodra!

The flood situation in Shkodra Region, as a result of intense rainfall and snowmelt in the Drini and Buna river basins, is heading towards unpredictable extremes.

Shkodra Lake, which has gone to maximum quotas, has already flooded the suburban neighborhoods of the city of Shkodra, where the water level is reported to be 40-50 cm.

In a few days, the land area under water from 1540 hectares has increased to about 4000 ha and according to today’s warnings of the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment is expected to expand flooded areas, especially in NënShkodër and near Lake Shkodra.

The alarm given and the situation on the ground is very serious and requires the special attention of the Government and the local government, which without further delays must take all effective measures for the evacuation of families endangered by water, as well as livestock, which are expected to be isolated.

Today I also talked to the Mayor of Shkodra, Mrs. Voltana Ademi, who informed me in detail about the aggravated situation and her real concern for the possible deterioration of the situation, which requires immediate intervention by the responsible state authorities.

Guaranteing all the institutional support, I asked her, that the Municipality of Shkodra to be at the height of fulfilling responsibilities in this extremely difficult situation and to have in main focus the health and life of the inhabitants.

Assessing with maximum responsibility the reported situation, I call on the Government to urgently declare the “State of Natural Disaster” in the flooded areas, in order to better manage the operational situation, to come to the aid to all families in need and to have absolute priority the protection of the life of every citizen and the minimization of the consequences on their properties and assets.

I reiterate the call to the Government to take very seriously the warnings of IGJEUM and not to leave at the mercy of fate the inhabitants of Shkodra, who deserve to be treated with dignity and to have all the attention and help of the state, especially in this period too difficult, aggravated also due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
