President Meta at the session of the IX Global Forum of Baku on “A changing Europe and the security of the Western Balkans”

In his address, the President of the Republic of Albania, H.E. Ilir Meta said, among other things:

Distinguished guests
Ladies and gentlemen,

I am honored to be a keynote speaker in this panel concerning the security of the Western Balkans and a changing Europe.

European Union cannot be neither stronger nor bigger in the international arena without the integration of the Western Balkan Countries.

Therefore, we consider the Berlin Process mechanism as main catalyzer of the EU integration of the Western Balkans.

We should focus on implementing the Berlin Process without delay and not get distracted and confused by non inclusive parallel alternative approaches

Why Berlin Process?

Because the Berlin Process supports the establishment of a common regional market based on four freedoms.

All 6 countries are part of and fully endorse this process.

Only some leaders support the Open Balkan alternative!

The Berlin Process has the EU as part of it.

The Open Balkans does not!

The Berlin Process has financial instruments to back connectivity projects.

The Open Balkans does not!

The Berlin Process invigorates the enlargement process, matching required reforms with financial rewards.

The Open Balkan presents itself as an alternative to EU accession, alienating the region as a hybrid political community.

The Berlin Process keeps the 6 countries of the Western Balkans in the political table of the European Union.

Every process that has the EU inside it represents the will of our countries.

Every process that bisects the EU represents the political fears of autocratic leaders to losing their power!

I would like to greet the clear commitment of the new Chancellor of Germany recently in our region on accelerating the Berlin Process and for the importance of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia aiming at not only normalizing their relations but also on the mutual recognition.
