President Meta praises People’s Hero Vasil Laçi: A fire of patriotism in the heart of an ordinary man can bring a great light to the darkness of oppression, occupation and tyranny over a people.

Today, the President of the Republic of Albania, H.E. Ilir Meta, praised the People’s Hero Vasil Laçi (posthumously) with the “Decoration of the National Flag”, with the motivation: To the anti-fascist patriot, who with his heroic and self-sacrificing act showed to all Albanians and especially the youth, that the path to freedom and liberation of the homeland passed only through the strengthening of relentless resistance to invaders and readiness for even the most sublime sacrifice. His attack against the usurper of the throne of Albania was the most meaningful patriotic demonstration against the fascist occupation and the violation of state and national sovereignty.

In his welcoming speech, during the solemn ceremony organized at the Institution of the President of the Republic, the Head of State stated that:

“Today, on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the passing into eternity of the People’s Hero, Vasil Laçi, I have the honor to award the highest decoration in the Republic of Albania, that of the National Flag.

A nineteen-year-old boy, driven only by freedom and patriotism, performed a heroic and self-sacrificing act that would go down in the history of the Albanian people as a symbol of defiance and resistance to occupation and tyranny.
Dressed in Albanian national costume, he told the invaders, local quislings and the entire world that our people are never subject to any enemy, external or internal.

That freedom is the most precious thing to us! That it will be defended with every act of sacrifice.

Vasil Laçi was not driven by the ideologies of the time.

But something much bigger and stronger urged Vasil to commit that patriotic act.

This was just the ideal and the sentiments of the national pride.

“I did it for Albania!” He said during the torture and before the execution.

Such bravery gave courage to the whole people and served as inspiration for the National Liberation Anti-Fascist Movement, bringing about the liberation of the country and the freedom of our people from the invaders.

The real greatness of his gesture is that he teaches generations even today that a single man can contribute to deliver a great and inspiring message.

That every simple individual can do his part in the fight against invasion and against any kind of tyranny.

That a fire of patriotism in the heart of an ordinary man can bring a great light to the darkness of oppression, occupation and tyranny over a people.

One lion heart Albanian trembled one of the greatest empires of the time.

Vasil Laçi remains a hero even today. Reminding generations that freedom is not given but won.

That every form of tyranny requires endurance, individual but also a national reaction.

A people that forgets the past cannot find the way to its future for freedom.

So we need to educate the younger generations more about the history of our heroes so that they can learn and understand how precious the freedom we enjoy today has been and still is.

A freedom that was not won once and for all, but that must be protected day by day against any form of dictatorship or tyranny.

To any regime of any time that suppresses the freedom of speech, thought, and fundamental rights to live a dignified, sovereign, and with integrity life.

The Albanian people are a rich people because they have young men and women, workers and intellectuals, ordinary people who love Albania and will always face any tyranny, even ordinary people give the best examples when the elites are corrupted by domestic or foreign tyranny.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” said the British statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke.

‘Long live free Albania!’ Was Vasil Laçi’s last call, which continues to resonate even today.

We honor and are proud of all our heroes, but also of the wonderful, brave and patriotic people of Albania, who in defense of freedom, democracy and their rights will never allow themselves to be oppressed and submitted again by any tyranny.

Thanks to this love for freedom, Albanians will never return to dictatorship, and the old and the young in this country will not allow the installation of any tyrannical and anti-national regime, but they will move forward with pride and dignity towards a democratic future and a European country, a dream of freedom of our hero Vasil Laçi, a dream of every Albanian youth even today and forever ”
